Estimating Roof Pitch
This tool helps you estimate roof pitch when precise measurements aren't available. You can estimate from architectural style, visual comparison with reference angles, or approximate measurements. While less precise than direct measurement, a good estimate is sufficient for preliminary cost calculations and material research.
Visual Estimation Guide
A 4:12 pitch looks gently sloped — you can walk on it carefully. A 6:12 pitch is noticeably steeper and requires caution. An 8:12 pitch looks steep and requires safety equipment to walk on. A 12:12 pitch (45 degrees) is dramatically steep — impossible to stand on without roof jacks. Compare your roof to these references for a starting estimate, then refine with measurement.
Estimation from Building Style
Ranch homes are typically 4:12-5:12. Cape Cod and Colonial styles run 8:12-10:12. Modern and mid-century homes are often 2:12-4:12. Craftsman bungalows use 4:12-6:12. A-frame cabins are 12:12 or steeper. Mediterranean styles with tile roofs average 4:12-6:12. These are generalizations — individual homes vary, but they narrow the range before measuring.
Smartphone Methods
Most smartphones have inclinometer apps that measure angle when held against a surface. If you can safely access the roof, place your phone on the roof surface to get a direct degree reading. From the ground, some apps can estimate pitch from a photograph of the roof's profile, though accuracy drops to plus-or-minus 1-2 pitch increments.
