Complete Guide to Roof Eave Measurements

Roof eaves are the critical edges where your roof extends beyond the exterior walls. Accurate eave measurements are essential for ordering materials like fascia boards, soffit panels, and drip edge. Understanding the difference between horizontal eaves and rake edges helps ensure proper material estimation.

Understanding Eave Components

Horizontal Eaves

The level edges where the roof meets the walls. These run parallel to the ground and are found on all roof types.

Rake Edges (Gable Ends)

The sloped edges on gable roofs that follow the roof pitch. Hip roofs don't have rake edges.

Fascia Board

Vertical boards attached to rafter ends, providing a mounting surface for gutters.

Soffit Panels

Horizontal surfaces under the overhang, often containing ventilation openings.

Calculation Method by Roof Type

Roof Type Horizontal Eaves Rake Edges
Gable 2 × (Length + 2×Overhang) 4 × Rafter Length
Hip 2 × (Length + Width + 4×Overhang) None
Shed 2×Length + Width + Overhangs 2 × Width (if gabled)
Mansard 1.5 × Perimeter None

Real-Life Calculation Examples

Example 1: Suburban Ranch House

Scenario: Single-story home: 60ft × 35ft with 2ft eave overhang

Roof Type: Gable roof with rake edges

Calculation Steps:
  1. Horizontal eaves: 2 × (60 + 2×2) = 128 ft
  2. Rake edges: 4 × 18.5 = 74 ft (approx)
  3. Total eave length: 202 ft
  4. Fascia needed: 222 ft (with 10% waste)
  5. Soffit area: 256 sq ft

✓ Order 225 ft fascia boards, 260 sq ft soffit panels

Example 2: Hip Roof Bungalow

Scenario: Compact home: 40ft × 30ft with 1.5ft overhang

Roof Type: Hip roof (all horizontal eaves)

Calculation Steps:
  1. Length eaves: 2 × (40 + 3) = 86 ft
  2. Width eaves: 2 × (30 + 3) = 66 ft
  3. Total horizontal: 152 ft
  4. No rake edges on hip roof
  5. Soffit area: 228 sq ft

✓ Order 170 ft fascia, 230 sq ft soffit

Example 3: Modern Shed Roof

Scenario: Contemporary design: 45ft × 25ft with 3ft overhang

Roof Type: Single-slope shed roof

Calculation Steps:
  1. Front/back eaves: 2 × (45 + 6) = 102 ft
  2. High side eave: 25 + 6 = 31 ft
  3. Total horizontal: 133 ft
  4. Side rakes: 2 × 28 = 56 ft
  5. Total length: 189 ft

✓ Order 210 ft fascia for complete coverage

Example 4: Two-Story Colonial

Scenario: Traditional home: 50ft × 32ft with 1.75ft overhang

Roof Type: Gable roof with dormers

Calculation Steps:
  1. Main eaves: 2 × (50 + 3.5) = 107 ft
  2. Main rakes: 4 × 17 = 68 ft
  3. Dormer eaves: 3 × 8 = 24 ft
  4. Dormer rakes: 6 × 5 = 30 ft
  5. Total: 229 ft

✓ Order 252 ft fascia (complex cuts need extra)

Example 5: Agricultural Barn

Scenario: Large barn: 80ft × 40ft with 4ft overhang

Roof Type: Gambrel roof design

Calculation Steps:
  1. Horizontal eaves: 2 × (80 + 8) = 176 ft
  2. Complex gambrel rakes: 4 sections
  3. Upper rakes: 4 × 12 = 48 ft
  4. Lower rakes: 4 × 16 = 64 ft
  5. Total: 288 ft

✓ Order 320 ft fascia for barn scale project

Material Planning Guide

Fascia Board Selection

Material Cost/ft Durability Maintenance
Pine Wood $2-4 10-15 years High (paint every 3-5 years)
Cedar $5-8 20-30 years Medium (seal every 5 years)
PVC $4-7 25-50 years Low (occasional cleaning)
Aluminum $6-10 30-40 years Very Low
Fiber Cement $5-9 50+ years Low (paint every 10-15 years)

Professional Installation Tips

  • Drip Edge Order: Install on eaves before underlayment, on rakes after underlayment
  • Ventilation Ratio: Maintain 1 sq ft of ventilation per 150 sq ft of attic space
  • Fascia Slope: Ensure 1/4" per foot slope for proper drainage
  • Joint Overlap: Overlap fascia sections by minimum 1 inch
  • Expansion Gaps: Leave 1/8" gaps for thermal expansion in vinyl/aluminum
  • Pest Prevention: Install 1/4" mesh screens over soffit vents
  • Fastener Choice: Use stainless steel or galvanized fasteners to prevent rust

Eave Length Calculations

Eave length is the total linear measurement along the lower edges of your roof where it overhangs the exterior walls. Accurate eave measurement is needed for ordering drip edge, gutter systems, soffit panels, and fascia boards. For a simple rectangular gable roof, total eave length equals twice the building length. Hip roofs have eaves on all four sides.

Measuring Eaves

Measure each eave run separately — building shape, bump-outs, and additions create segments of different lengths. Include any covered porches, attached garages, or breezeways with continuous rooflines. For material ordering, measure to the nearest foot and round up. Gutter sections overlap at joints, so add 2-3 inches per joint to your total gutter length.

Overhang Depth

The overhang (distance from the wall to the eave edge) typically ranges from 6 to 36 inches. Wider overhangs protect walls and windows from rain but increase wind load. Climate guides overhang depth: dry climates need minimal overhang (6-12 inches), moderate climates benefit from 12-24 inches, and rainy regions may use 24-36 inches. Building codes in high-wind zones may limit overhang depth.

Related Materials

Drip edge runs the entire eave length plus all rake edges. Fascia board covers the vertical face of the rafter tails — order by linear foot in the board width matching your rafter depth. Soffit panels close the underside of the overhang and are calculated by eave length times overhang depth. Continuous soffit vents are sized by eave length based on the ventilation NFA requirements.
